Picov to Casino Ajax — 60-second history
Alex Picov's family opened Picov Downs in 1969 — Quarter Horse racing on farmland that would later become a fixture in Durham. 2006 added OLG slots next to the oval, so betting windows and machine banks shared one property.
2018 renamed the gaming side Casino Ajax under Great Canadian while Pickering's resort opened. Ajax kept roughly 500 machines rather than moving everything east. Locals still treat the crossing as the track-first site that grew a permanent slot hall. Pickering is the destination resort play.
Track buzz and the slot hall
Saturday in May smells different from 2 a.m. on a Wednesday in February — patio and grandstand noise versus an empty rail and humming slots. When the oval is dark, simulcast and the Off-Track Lounge carry racing on screens. Live cards return each May–October season.
